History

Electronic Chart Centre (ECC) was originally a maritime division of the Norwegian Mapping Authority (NMA). On 30 June 1999, we were incorporated as a state-owned company to form and operate the first regional electronic navigational chart centre (RENC) for the provision of consistent and reliable ENC services through international cooperation.

This collaboration was named PRIMAR. We were separated from the NMA in order to pursue operations which do not fall naturally within the scope of a government agency. The principal object of the state ownership is to meet society's requirements for safe navigation.

With our experience from developing and operating leading ENC distribution services, we have participated in the creation of relevant international standards published by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) as well as of ENC service interfaces.

Our goal is to continue to create simple, secure and functional solutions in collaboration with our customers and partners in order to contribute to security and value creation in society.

We are therefore constantly in a proactive dialogue with industry and our customers about trends and the need to ensure easy and efficient access to quality geographic reference data. That includes developing solutions for on-demand purchasing and delivery of such data through network-based commercial sites, for example.

These conversations will affect our priorities and strategies for the future.
